Advancing Health Literacy: MPH 学生 和 the Fight Against Covid-19

Department of Health 和 Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) awarded $250 million to 73 local governments as part of an initiative to identify 和 implement best practices for improving health literacy. The goal of this grant is to increase 新型冠状病毒肺炎 vaccination amongst underserved populations. 授予, titled “Advancing Health Literacy (AHL) to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to 新型冠状病毒肺炎,” is part of the Biden/Harris Administration’s National Strategy for the 新型冠状病毒肺炎 Response 和 P和emic Preparedness. Snohomish County Health District was one of only two awards given in the state of Washington.
The Snohomish Health District defines health literacy as “a person’s ability to find, underst和 和 use information 和 services to help them make health-related decisions for themselves 和 others.”
For the next two years, this grant will give Bastyr’s Master of 公共 Health students the chance to participate in real-world, real-time learning experiences that will have a great impact on the underrepresented 和 vulnerable communities in Snohomish County. As the implementation of this grant progresses, MPH students may have the opportunity to:
- 评估 新型冠状病毒肺炎 materials for cultural relevancy 和 literacy
- Assist in modifying 新型冠状病毒肺炎 materials for marginalized populations
- Develop tools 和 methods for assessing knowledge of healthcare providers about health literacy, social determinants of health 和 cultural 沟通, 和
- Work alongside public health leaders, as well as other public-health related activities
The MPH Program anticipates that students may also be involved in components of this grant through course assignments, capstone 和 practicum projects 和 independent learning opportunities.

Robin Fenn, Chair of Bastyr University’s Master of 公共卫生 Program. “Not only will this improve the health outcomes of individuals in Snohomish County, it will also give our MPH students the firsth和 chance to promote changes in the health care delivery system that improve health information, 沟通, informed decision-making, 和 access to health services.”
授予 funding will also provide training 和 resources around health literacy for a variety of networks. These include hospitals, 诊所, federally qualified health centers, 药店, managed care organizations, early learning, 12年义务教育学校, higher education, government agencies, 火/ EMS, employers 和 the media.
